Superfoody Porridge

I have porridge quite regularly, but mostly its boring and I just shove it down so my stomach is full, I’d take porridge oats, add water and microwave. Then add a tiny bit of almond milk and honey to make it bearable. It’s not really much fun so I’m broadening my horizons.

I’ve been getting all kinds of inspiration from different ‘what I eat in a day’ you tube videos for vegans. I found a similar recipe and adapted slightly for my taste. It was really tasty and filling so I thought I would share.

Here is how I made a delicious superfood seed porridge. I prepped all this the night before as I have no time in the morning, but you can do a batch so it lasts a while.
I whizzed together with the milling blade of the nutribullet some hemp seeds, flaxseeds, goji berries, cacao nibs, chia seeds until they were mixed and fine. My hemp seeds and flaxseeds are unmilled so I have to do this first or the taste would be strange. I made a big jar of this for future use.

I added a couple of spoons of this to half a cup of oats and then mixed in half a cup of almond milk and half a cup of water and stirred it up. You could use all almond milk but it costs 45rmb per carton here, (which is around Ā£5) so I try to not go too crazy with it. Then I just put it in the fridge over night to soak together. In the morning I put it in the microwave for about 1 1/2 minutes and then topped with chopped bananas, chopped pecans and a little maple syrup. It was so delicious. The cacao nibs made it chocolatey too.

I’m going to try having this cold and topping it with a variety of fruits. No more boring breakfasts!

For those in Shanghai who want to get their hands on the ingredients. I got most of the mix from epermarket, but you can get them elsewhere at health food shops and some import stores. The hemp seeds I brought from the UK but I believe you can get them at Sprout Lifestyle on South Shaanxi. For oats the best place is normal Chinese supermarkets. The price can range dramatically and is incredibly high in import stores. I bought Quaker Oats today at the supermarket on the corner of Zhenning Lu and Huashan Lu for 15.90rmb.

Recipe for superfood seed mix

Equal parts:

Chia seeds

Cacao nibs

Hemp seeds


Goji berries

Whiz up in a blender or bash with a pestle and mortar

Recipe for porridge

1/2 cup oats

1/2 cup almond milk

1/2 cup water

A table spoon of the superfood seed mix

Mix together and heat on the hob for 5 to 10 mins if eating straight away or put it in a pot in the fridge over night and you only need to heat for a minute or two or not at all if you’re into that.


Anything you like but I added chopped banana, chopped pecan and a drizzle of maple syrup
